Therapy, supervision and coaching.
Five ways of working with Dr Steve Vinay Gunther — online from anywhere, or in person in Shanghai and other locations by arrangement. To an international clientele.
What therapy involves.
Available for online sessions, or in person in Shanghai and locations where I may be teaching. Sessions are typically held over Zoom; FaceTime, WeChat and Google Meet are also options.
- 01A first email, phone, FaceTime or WeChat conversation — to answer any questions about me or the way I work.
- 02Read the disclosure statement, which sets out the parameters of working together.
- 03Fill out a client intake form — both partners complete the form for couples work.
- 04A first appointment of 90 minutes — to understand context and the current focus.
- 05Subsequent sessions of 60 minutes (90 minutes for couples). Pro rata rates by country, on a sliding scale. Frequency is weekly. After the first session, we work in a six-hour set to evaluate fit.
- The issue you want to work with
- Your feelings
- Bigger picture and wider influences — past, future, family, culture
- The places you get stuck
- Your organising beliefs
- Your core needs
- Who you are — your personal style
- Questions of meaning and purpose
- Unfinished business
- Experimenting with new ways of being
- Dialogue between the two of us
- Exploration of relationship, blind spots, and the need for support
Couples therapy.
A perspective drawn from forty years of professional practice, a long marriage, raising children and grandchildren — and writing a book of advice for men about relationships with women.
I have written a book of advice for men about relationships with women. I have succeeded and failed myself in relationship — and tried again. What I can say is that I keep working at it. I keep learning and growing. I discover how to differentiate more fully, and stay connected. I have been through all the phases of child raising, kids leaving home, grandchildren.
So I have a big perspective on relationship — my own insights, and my forty years of professional experience.
I bring all of this into my work with couples, along with my therapeutic training, my understanding of how family systems work, and my willingness to support couples in their evolution. I am not going to solve your battles, or play judge and jury as to who is right and wrong. I am interested in something deeper and more sustaining — your process as a couple. That means I pay careful attention to the way the two of you build and play out your relationship before my eyes. And I give you feedback, and invite you into experimenting with something radically new and different.
Whether you are trying to save a marriage that is dying, or want to build new foundations, I am ready to be a catalyst in your journey.
Supervision for therapists and managers.
A Gestalt orientation applied to your particular setting — awareness, authenticity, empowerment, and relationship.
A standard form — conversations about work-related matters and client management.
Witnessing a client session — by video, audio, or live — with feedback after. A higher quality of supervision; videos can be sent via Dropbox or similar.
Supervision can be one-to-one or in a group setting. Group supervision can be either reporting format, or direct using co-participants.
