What therapy involves.

A short overview of how I work and what you can expect — written to help you decide whether to take the next step.

The orientation

I work in the tradition of contemporary relational Gestalt therapy. The orientation is existential, phenomenological, dialogical, wholistic, and practical. We work in the here and now, in dialogue, with attention to the whole field of your life — past, present, future; body, family, culture.

Awareness is the central tool. Rather than pushing you to change, I support you to become more fully who you already are. Change, paradoxically, tends to follow.

The first session

We begin with a 90-minute first session to understand context, current focus, and what you are hoping for. I will ask about your history, your present life, and the specific thing that has brought you to therapy now.

After the first session, we agree to work in a six-session set and evaluate fit at the end. There is no obligation to continue beyond the first session if it does not feel right to you.

The work itself

Sessions are 60 minutes for individuals, 90 minutes for couples. Frequency is normally weekly. We may touch on feelings, beliefs, body, dreams, the past, the present, and what you do not yet know about yourself. We may use experiments — small, structured pieces of work designed to bring an idea into the room rather than only talking about it.

I am an active participant in the relationship — not invisible behind silence or interpretation. You are the expert on your own life; I offer presence, perspective, and the discipline of awareness.

What we touch

  • The issue that brought you to therapy
  • Your feelings
  • The bigger picture — past, future, family, culture
  • Where you get stuck
  • Your organising beliefs
  • Your core needs
  • Who you are — your personal style
  • Questions of meaning and purpose
  • Unfinished business
  • Experimenting with new ways of being
  • Dialogue between the two of us
  • Blind spots and the need for support
